Charles Burkett Obituary

Charles E. "Barney" Burkett left his worldly cares behind on Monday, January 15th surrounded by his loving family at his East Moline home. He made it 76 years!

Barney was born December 28, 1941, in Monmouth, Illinois to Charles Elra Burkett and Dorothy Irene (Belt) but grew up in Rock Island, Illinois.

He married his current wife, Janet Brown, on May 19, 2006. He had two children, Matt "BJ" and Michelle, from a previous marriage.

During his youth, he spent many hours playing pinball at Cort Cigar Store where he was a self-proclaimed pinball champion. As a young man he enjoyed racing cars, working on cars and painting cars. Although he was a reserved man by nature, he enjoyed spending time with friends who shared the same hobbies and interests and would often be the host to gatherings. On most weekends the smell of paint, the sounds of laughter or engines revving would permeate the air around the garage. It ticked the neighbors off something fierce. He loved to travel to the southwest for vacation often quipping that there was just something that pulled his soul in that direction.

His early occupations included being a delivery driver for Lou's Italian Village, a DJ for dances at South Park and a pun-filled and sarcastic bartender at The Grenada. In January of 1974, he became employed with John Deere Harvester Works, retiring in September 2001 after 28 years. His retirement years were filled with travel, television, crosswords, going to the races and taking care of his Lady Bug.

Those left to honor his memory are his wife, Janet Brown, East Moline, his children Matt (Sara) Burkett, Colona, Michelle (Scott) Brandom, Sherrard, brother Gary (Sandy) Burkett and sister Marilyn Smith of Monmouth, and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Randy Burkett and Larry Coffelt, and his special girl, Lady Bug.

Special thanks to Dr. Okba and Nurse Jen, Heartland Hospice caregivers Cherish, Darla and Crystal.

In keeping with his wishes there will be no funeral services.

A Celebration of Barney's Life will be held for family and friends on Saturday, January 20th at Frank's Pizzeria in Silvis, Illinois from 3-5 pm.
