Jannie "Nute" Mae (Walker) Simmons

Jannie M. “Nute” Simmons, 96, of East Moline, passed away Sunday, November 7, 2021 at Genesis Illini Campus, Silvis, Illinois.

Funeral services will be 12:00 p.m. Friday, November 19, 2021 at Sullivan-Ellis Mortuary, Ltd., 1902-3^rd Avenue East Moline. Rev. P.W. Harris will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services.  Cremation rites will be accorded after services.  Memorials may be made to the family in care of Sullivan-Ellis Mortuary. 

Jannie Mae Walker was born on Christmas day, 1924 in Faunsdale, Alabama; the daughter of Sally (Woods) and Daniel Walker.  As a young girl, Jannie, her baby sister, and her mother were in a tornado.  Her mother was hospitalized for a long period of time so Jannie worked in the fields. Jannie was educated in Alabama. She moved to the Quad Cities in 1950 where she worked for the East Moline State Hospital.  She later worked for the Rock Island Produce Co. last working in the 1980’s.  Jannie married Samuel Simmons. He passed  April 28, 1984.  She was a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, East Moline for 51 years.  She has helped at the church in many roles such as usher and head of the kitchen.  Jannie enjoyed playing bingo and worshipping at her church.  She was a big fan of the old westerns; “Bonanza, Gunsmoke, Lone Ranger, and Rifleman.”

Those left to cherish her memory are her sister-in-laws, Mary Watson, East Moline, and Marie Drew, Omaha, NE and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Samuel Simmons, her brother, Charlie Walker, her infant sister, Paralee Walker.
