Jose Tapia Obituary
Jose C. Tapia Sr., 74, of East Moline, IL, died Monday, January 7, 2013 at his home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Silvis, IL on Monday, January 14, 2013. Rosary will be on Sunday, Jan. 13, at 1:30 p.m. with visitation from 2:00 4:00 p.m. at Sullivan-Ellis Mortuary, Ltd., East Moline. Rev. Gregory Jozefiak will officiate. Burial is in St. Mary Cemetery, East Moline.
Jose was born March 6, 1938 in Yuriria, Guanajuato, MX, the son of Erasmo and Nicolasa (Pizano) Tapia. He was a grinder, welder and brick mason for Franks Foundry and Sivyer Steel and he was the first Mexican American in the Quad City area to hold the position of union president of UAW Locals 1564 and 377. He dedicated 32 years for the betterment of his UAW brothers and sisters. Jose also enhanced the lives of the working community. He was very involved in the political process of the UAW and he was a staunch Democrat.
He loved family gatherings. He enjoyed cooking, fishing, boxing and working on cars. Jose was quite the handyman.
He is survived by his sons, Joe (Yolanda) Tapia Jr, Jacksonville, FL, John (Candice) Tapia, Highland Ranch, CO, Mark (Laura) Tapia, Troy (Chocos) Tapia, both of East Moline, daughters, Anna Phelps, Rosalie (Roderick Harris) Tapia, both of East Moline, Melinda (Rick) Jimenez, Lisa Anderson, Valerie (Sam) Benjamin, all of Davenport, IA, many grandchildren, great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild, brothers, Erasmo Eddie Tapia, Coal Valley, Rodrigo (Luisa) Tapia, East Moline, Maximiliano Max (Penny) Tapia, Hampton, Nicolas (Georgia) Tapia, Wisconsin, Margarito (Marieta) Tapia, Houston, TX, Antonio (Lourdes) Tapia, San Antonio, TX, Raul (Graciela) Tapia, Rafael (Lucy) Tapia, Jesus (Maria) Tapia, all of Monterey, MX, sisters, Isabel (Andres) Tapia de Orsorio, Baja, CA, Maria Tapia, Cancun, and Sylvia (Elias) Tapia de Carrillo, Monterey, MX and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Manuel and Miguel, and sister-in-law, Tammie.
