Joyce L. (Range) Johnson

Joyce Johnson passed away Monday, June 15, 2020 at her home.  

Joyce Range Johnson was born August 28, 1941 in Galesburg, IL; the daughter of George and Otea Williams Range. She was the youngest child of nine children. Joyce was baptized at an early age at Bethesda Baptist Church of Galesburg, IL.

She was married to James L. Johnson Sr. to this union three children survive James L. Johnson Jr. of East Moline, Joy Johnson of Rock Island, IL, Jerald (Valencia) Johnson of Rock Island, IL., and Dena (Terry) Woods of Galesburg, IL. And bonus son C.J. (Janice) Jackson.  One sister Exzelma Howell of Quincy, IL. Fourteen grandchildren, 25 great- grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, and many friends. Joyce was involved in all her grandkids lives and proud to say that they all graduated from High School and said the Lord has blessed her with them.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and three sisters, two nieces Malinda Oliver-Bruce and Virgie Oliver and Granddaughter Diana S. Johnson.

Joyce joined Gaines Chapel in 1964, she served on the Usher Board and Pastors Aid. In 2006 she re-dedicated her faith and joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church of East Moline, IL. Joyce graduated from Blackhawk College for welding. After graduation she worked for International Harvester as a Mig-Welder until 1981. In 1984, Joyce was employed for Metro Link as a bus driver and was promoted as the first female supervisor in 1988. Joyce remained as supervisor until her retirement in 2004 due to illness.

Joyce was a member of the Lions Club, NAACP, and was an avid BINGO player where she was known as the “Mayor of Bingo.” Joyce loved being outside, gardening, traveling, and being around people.
