Stanley G. Gray, 70, of East Moline, ended his earthly journey on Jan. 31,
2014, in the home of Dawn Gray and his late brother, Timothy Gray.
Stanley was surrounded by family and friends who were with him to the
end of the fight with his recurrence of cancer.
Stanley's visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, at
Sullivan-Ellis Mortuary, East Moline, at which time, friends and
acquaintances may share in celebrating his life and tell their own
"Stanley stories."
His ashes will be buried next to his parents,
Lester and Evelyn Gray and his sister Velma Gray at the Hampton
Cemetery privately at a later time. In lieu of flowers, the family
would request you take a friend to lunch or pay it forward to a
stranger.
Stanley was born Nov. 12, 1943, to Lester I. and Evelyn L. Gray at home near
the Mississippi River in Hampton. He was the fifth of seven siblings
and was blessed to have his maternal grandparents George M and
Estella C. Gray next door during his early years. Stanley spent many
happy days and nights with his father and two younger brothers, Bob
and Tim, hunting and fishing and cultivating many gardens through the
years. He was a beautiful , happy young child with huge dimples, big
brown eyes and blonde hair. Stanley's older sister Velma treasured him
during her short life, as if he were her own.
Stanley was involved in many vocations during his life, which included
construction, brick layer assistant, and concrete finishing. Stanley
loved children of all ages and had many pseudo-grandchildren during
his life. Ali Green was like a granddaughter to him and was the apple
of his eye, spending many happy weekends with Grandpa Stan. He also
spent many holidays with Ali and her parents, Robert and Beverly
Green. Stanley was generous to a fault, and gave freely of his time
and talents to anyone whose path he crossed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Velma M.Gray, and
his youngest brother Timothy J. Gray; also nieces and nephews, George
Lopez, Penny Lopez, and Dennis Gray.
He is survived by his brothers, Lester I. Gray of Burlington, Iowa,
and Robert Gray of Austin, Texas; and sisters, Joan Lopez, East
Moline, and Sheila Gray McCormick, Charlottesville, Va. He was
lovingly cared for by Dawn Gray, his sister-in-law during his final
months, assisted by her daughters April Edwards and Krystal Pierce and
their four children. Cody, Kaleb, Trey and Skylar.
Stanley is also survived by his nieces, Kate McCormick Dugger, Broken
Island, Va., and Lynn Gray, Burlington, IA; nephews, Steven and Christopher Gray,
Texas, and Rick Gray, Muscatine; his only surviving cousin, Thelma
Morris, East Moline; and special friends, Robert Green and Russell
Sellers, in addition, to too many others to list.
