Thelma Arlene (Peterson) Morris

A most caring and selfless woman, Thelma Morris, age 88, of East Moline, died on December
23 at Genesis Hospital, Silvis. She will be remembered as a tireless worker, and a loyal friend to
She was born in Whitewater, WI to Frank and Emma Peterson. Her early years were spent there on a farm. The family returned to East Moline where she lived for the remainder of her life.
Thelma graduated from United Township High School in 1952. Many of her classmates became
lifelong friends. She was a member of the 52 Club and contributed to planning many class
Thelma met and married Norman Morris in 1952 and celebrated 58 anniversaries together. They built a home where they spent the remainder of their lives. Much of the construction and home improvements were done by the couple. Thelma liked decorating her home with antiques and crafted seasonal decorations. She loved gardening and entertaining.
She held several jobs over her life. Briefly, she worked for a real estate firm and John Deere Co.
In 1970, she began a career with Community Savings & Loan. Beginning as a teller, she was
promoted often. She managed a branch office in Moline, was a loan officer, operations officer,
and secretary to the board of directors. She impacted the lives of many employees and
Thelma volunteered many hours to civic causes. She was actively involved in political
campaigns, and voter registration campaigns. With Norman, she worked with city parks. In
1995, they organized a concession stand at EMPIRE park during Ride the River to raise funds
for city parks. In 2001, the couple received the East Moline Citizens of the Year award.
She enjoyed traveling, camping, and her family. She attended every school activity and sporting
event in which her children and grandchildren participated.
Thelma is survived by her daughter, Judy (David) Townsend, Aurora, IL her grandsons, Ethan
(Amanda) Bruce, Durand IL, and Evan Bruce, Hampton, IL. Also,great-grandson Lucas Early,
Coal Valley, IL and great-granddaughter, Kaia Bruce, Hampton, IL
She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Emma Peterson, her husband Norman C.
Morris, her son Brian Morris, and her brother Everett Peterson.
Private graveside services will be at The Rock Island National Cemetery.
