Verna Harmon Obituary
Verna Jean (Nelson) Harmon, 79, of Sycamore, IL, formerly of Erie, IL, died Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family. Visitation will be Saturday, February 2, 2013 from 9:00 11:00 a.m. with services following at 11:00 a.m. at United Methodist Church, Erie, IL. Rev. Rod Dye will officiate. Burial is in Erie Cemetery. Sullivan-Ellis Mortuary, Ltd., East Moline, is assisting the family.
Jean was born January 28, 1934 in Sterling, IL, the daughter of Vernon B. and Ruth E. (Eddy) Avery. She married John Freude and later marrying Melvin Lindy Nelson, and after his death, Gary Harmon. She was a secretary of new accounts at the Erie State Bank for 25 years, retiring in 2000. She owned and operated Jeans Beauty Shop and was former owner and operator of The Pink Pony Drive-in. She volunteered for the preschool after Lindy (Melvin Nelson) passed and went to New Orleans and helped with the hurricane Katrina Recovery, and also did mission work with her husband, Gary. Jean and Lindy were Treasurer of the United Methodist Church. She was always volunteering. She was also a greeter at Sullivan-Ellis Mortuary.
She is survived by her sons, Jeffrey (Laurie) Wolf Freude, Des Moines, IA, Michael (Dawn) Freude, Franklin Grove, IL, daughter, Janelle (Jerry) Flieder, Sycamore, IL, 8 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, brothers, Ronald L. (Helen) Marlowe Avery, Abingdon, VA, Arlyn R. (Judy) Avery, Erie, IL and a host of nieces and nephews,
stepchildren are daughters, Angela (Patrick) Roegher, Toledo, OH, Lori White, Bowling Green, OH, sons, Eric (Stephania) Harmon, Delta, OH, Brad (Dixie) Harmon, Deshler, OH, and several step grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Lindy Nelson and Gary Harmon.
